If you want to get ahead - get a hat!
01 February 2010
One item of clothing that has undoubtedly come in handy of late has been a hat, and amateur milliners in Arbroath have been hard at work designing and constructing their own collection.
As part of Age Concern and Help the Aged in Scotland's popular "Wear a Hat Day" event, dozens of pupils of Arbroath High School gathered on a cold Friday afternoon recently to reveal their handiwork.
A fashion show was arranged and an outside adjudicator was conscripted to ensure that fair play was the order of the day. Pupils and staff actually paid to attend the event, which resulted in the splendid sum of £563.64 being raised to help older people in the Arbroath area.
Douglas Macnaughtan, the Charity's Development Officer for the East Region, who met participating staff and pupils and formally accepted the cheque donation, said: "Hats off to Arbroath High School, which, like more and more schools around Scotland, adopts a Charity of the Month. This has proved to be an excellent way of raising awareness of local issues and being of practical help in the community."
Teacher Sally Brown and eight members of the pupils' Charities Committee were happy to learn all about the work of Age Concern and Help the Aged in Scotland in Arbroath and nationally. Many of them were aware of the splendid services provided for older people from the Arbroath Town Mission Centre, which has been a partner organisation of the Charity's for more than 20 years.
"We are all over the moon to find out how the funds raised through our efforts are being put to such practical use within our own community", said Sally Brown. "The pupils have worked really hard and had enormous fun making and showing off their hats!"
